How to Read a One Piece TCG Card: Cost, Power, Counter and Effects

Start by identifying the card type, then read its colour, cost, power, attribute, type and effect text. Check the Counter value where one is printed, and note the card number, rarity and block symbol. Leaders also show a Life value. This order helps you understand what a card does before you decide whether it belongs in your deck.

Before buying a card in India, compare the printed card details with the official card list. Read the effect from top to bottom, including any activation label and requirement. Finally, check the current legality rules separately, because card anatomy and tournament eligibility are different questions.

The official play guide describes five card types. A Leader sets the deck direction and has a Life value. DON!! cards pay costs or boost power. Characters can attack. Events provide one-time effects, while Stages provide ongoing support.

This role changes how you read the rest of the card. A Leader is the centre of the deck, Characters are the cards you normally use to attack, Events are played for their effect, and Stages remain as support. DON!! cards are resources used to pay costs or increase power.

Cost shows the active DON!! required to play or activate a Character, Event or Stage card from your hand. Power shows battle strength. A printed Counter value on a Character can be used as a power increase during the Counter Step.

Only Leaders have a printed Life value. When a Leader takes damage, a Life card may be added to hand, or its Trigger can be activated instead. Colour, type and attribute are separate fields. Types can be multiple and slash-separated. Leaders and Characters can show attributes such as Slash, Strike, Ranged, Special, Wisdom or a question mark.

Read card text from top to bottom. The opening label tells you when or how to use the effect. Official card-list text views show labels such as On Play, When Attacking and Activate: Main. They also show Once Per Turn, DON!! x1, Counter and Trigger labels.

On Play tells you to check the effect when the card is played. When Attacking tells you to check it during that attack. Activate: Main identifies an effect used in the Main Phase. Once Per Turn limits how often that effect can be used, while DON!! x1 shows a DON!! requirement. Read the rest of the sentence before deciding whether you can use it.

Every card has a colour. Type is a separate field and may contain more than one type separated by a slash. Attribute is another separate field, and it appears on Leaders and Characters. These fields help you understand the card's identity and how it may fit your deck.

Rarity does not affect gameplay. The card number is used during game preparation and for the four-copy rule. The block symbol identifies the card's block and does not itself affect gameplay. For organised play from April 2026, the official Block Number System uses the number printed in the lower-right corner to determine Standard card-pool eligibility.

When you find a card online or in a local shop, begin with the card type and colour. If it is a Leader, note its Life value. If it is a Character, note its power and Counter. For an Event or Stage, focus on the cost and the effect text. For any card, read the attribute and type fields where they appear.

Next, read the effect from top to bottom. Look for timing labels such as On Play, When Attacking or Activate: Main, then check limits and requirements such as Once Per Turn or DON!! x1. Record the card number, rarity and block symbol, and compare the details with the official card list. If you plan to play organised events, verify the current block-based card-pool rules as a separate step.
